Mount Vernon, NY:
The Mount Vernon Board of Education will be hosting a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, November 15, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. for the new Longfellow Middle School which is part of the five year $100 Million Capital Improvement Program. This ceremony marks the construction of one of two new schools in the City of Mount Vernon. Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2003.
The Capital Improvement Program was approved in a Bond Referendum in May of 2000. Since the approval of the bond issue, the Board of Education hired Turner Construction (New York) and Luster National (New York) under a Joint Venture, to provide program, design, and construction management services through the program's scheduled completion in late 2004. The Board of Education also hired three architectural firms to design these school projects. The architects are D'Amore Design Studio, E.I. Associates, and Mount Vernon School Architects Joint Venture.
The following elementary, middle and high schools are currently being reviewed by the New York State Education Department: Williams, Hamilton, Traphagen and the new Grimes Elementary Schools, Franko and Davis Middle Schools, and the Mandela High School. The remaining schools are still in various stages of design development or construction. The Board of Education will celebrate one additional ground breaking ceremony to commence the construction of the new Grimes Elementary School once the design has been approved by the New York State Education Department.
