Luster National, Inc. initiates innovative student internship program for $500 million runway expansion project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

ATLANTA, Georgia -

At Luster National Inc.'s initiation, Hartsfield Construction Management (HCM) and Clark Atlanta University (CAU), one of Atlanta's historically Black colleges, have created an innovative student internship program at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Incorporated as part of the airport's $500 million runway expansion project, the program places Clark Atlanta University civil engineering students in paid internship positions on this historic airport project.

"The internship program seemed like a natural way for the airport and the community to both benefit. We were very pleased with the positive response we received from the City of Atlanta Department of Aviation and CAU representatives," said Dr. Laura Luster, Program Manager for Luster National's Training and Community Development division. "The enthusiastic support of Dr. John Hurley at CAU, John Cordner of HCM, and John Boatright, Project Officer at Hartsfield Development Program (HDP) was instrumental in making this initiative a reality."

The candidate interview and selection process was conducted by Dr. Laura Luster, Paula Casey, Business Development Manager for Luster National's Atlanta office, and HCM team members Kelly Smith and Warren Llado. "The students represented CAU and its Engineering department extremely well," said Paula Casey. "Their delivery, knowledge and experience reflected highly on the academic training they have received and their dedication to their studies."

The internship candidates have been hired by Hartsfield Construction Management (HCM), a joint venture team formed with Luster National, DMJM Aviation, Bovis Lend Lease, Louis Berger and the Thacker Operating Company, Inc., and began their assignments on May 27. HCM is the first consultant team at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport to hire interns for the runway expansion project. "This project presents a unique training opportunity that shouldn't be missed," said John Boatright.

"We hope that this is the beginning of a long-term working relationship with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, CAU and HCM, and that the program will expand to all of the airport consultant teams," said Paula Casey.

Headquartered in Oakland, CA, Luster National, Inc. is a professional consulting firm providing management, planning, training, community outreach and other related services to public and private organizations. As a partner on the Hartsfield Construction Management joint venture team, Luster National is construction manager and resident engineer for the new 9,000-ft parallel runway construction, which is part of a 10-year, $5.4 billion capital improvement program at the airport that will include other land and airside facilities.
