Team Performance Measurement Briefed to the Airport Consultant Council Symposium

Tony Witter, Program Manager for Organizational Effectiveness, Leadership, and Team Facilitation at Luster National, Inc., recently spoke at the 2003 Airport Consultant Council symposium for Airport Planning Design & Construction held in Denver, Colorado February 19-21.

Tony spoke on the importance of articulating project measurement and feedback so all project stakeholders buy-in to the metrics. His emphasis on utilizing team facilitation sessions, and one-on-one coaching, as a way to build acceptance of measurement and feedback tools stems from his 28 years of experience of working with diverse groups of professionals. "A good project manager will know in his/her gut if the team is working well together." If a team is not working well together, then the Project Manager must take immediate action to assess the obstacles and then bring the team together for team building sessions. Ignoring low team performance or cohesion will not make these problems go away.

Tony stated that bringing in an outside consultant/facilitator is the best way to solve these problems. First, the outside consultant is emotionally unattached to the process and can create an atmosphere of openness. Second, the Project Manager is able to evaluate everything happening in the process and can weigh is at any time he/she feels appropriate, without having to expend the emotional energy to run the process. The important emphasis here is that the outside consultant/facilitator works for the Project Manager to get the outcomes desired. Third, an outside consultant brings experience and knowledge to the process. Lastly, and maybe most important, it sends the message to the team members that the Project Manager is committed to get the team on track and to do it by letting them be part of the process. Team members perform at their peak when they feel that they are part of the team problem solving process.

Tony has worked and helped organizations such as Merrill Lynch, Lennar Home Builders, the US Army, and Luster's internal organization gain consensus and sustainable approaches to measuring how well they work together.
