Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport
Celebrates the Opening of Fifth Runway

Runway 10-28, The Most Important Runway in AmericaAtlanta, GA, May 16, 2006

The Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is considered to be the busiest airport in the world. In order to meet the heavy demands of travel, airport officials enacted an aggressive plan which included the improvement and expansion of a new fifth runway. During the last five years, activities around the airport included many beyond the required day-to-day operations.

The $1.2 billion dollar addition has been innovative throughout development. The project required an estimated 220,000 cubic yards of concrete to finalize the 9,000-foot-long taxiway and runway. Not an easy task, considering that 27 million cubic yards of soil was transported from an offsite location prior to the actual construction. Enough soil to fill six Georgia Domes was moved via a specially built conveyor belt system extending over five miles. Gigantic Cat777D dump trucks worked 24 hours a day 7 days a week for over a year just to distribute the mountains of dirt in preparation for the actual construction.

To allow for the massive length of the runway, a 1,200 foot long by 700 foot wide bridge had to be constructed over the Interstate 285 while maintaining the daily flow of traffic. The new Bridge-way cost an estimated $509 million, and now proudly sits 70 feet above the ten lanes of East/West-bound traffic where approximately 140,000 vehicles per day pass through the tunnel below. Travelers utilize the tunnel without the realization that above them rests over 1,000 pre-stressed beams weighing more than 135,000 pounds each joined by 6,500,000 pounds of steel reinforcement and 34,000 cubic yards of deck concrete.

Shortly, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will open its new fifth runway - on time and on budget. Considered the most important runway in America, this runway will have a positive impact on the flow of air traffic throughout the national aviation system. Harold Heflin, an employee of Luster National, Inc. for the past nine years, held the position of Senior Inspector of the new fifth runway project. He will be attending the opening ceremony and celebrating the success of this Luster National, Inc. project management endeavor. Luster, along with its other joint venture partners are expecting their current five-year contract to be renewed for another five years. The Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport still has over $2 billion dollars of additional work yet to be done.
