OVERVIEW

The AirTrain is an automated guideway light rail system, serving terminals at San Francisco International Airport and, eventually, remote locations north of the terminals. The AirTrain will connect all terminals, the new Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) station connecting passengers from San Francisco and outlying cities with SFO, the rental car facility, and long-term parking areas and garages.
The initial phase, the Terminal Loop, consists of a 1.25-mile-long elevated dual-guideway loop and a single guideway spur to an interim maintenance facility. Other fixed facilities include station platform structures, equipment rooms, and safety walkways. The contract includes the construction of a 25,000 square foot maintenance facility, with space for vehicle inspections, maintenance and washing. Three center platform passenger stations have been built, one each at the south, central and north terminals. Pedestrian bridges connecting AirTrain stations to the terminals have also been completed.
Two guideways (Eastside Guideway and the Westside Guideway), providing structural support for the AirTrain, connect the new International Terminal to the existing domestic terminal facilities.
Luster and its joint venture partner are responsible for constructability and value engineering reviews; assisting airport staff with construction bidding; managing and coordinating the construction contractors activities; inspecting contractor work for quality control and compliance with contract documents and codes; developing and monitoring construction schedules; managing cost and contractor payments; monitoring and reporting on progress; mitigating construction conflicts; and providing close-out services.
Testing of the AirTrain vehicles and operating system and training of AirTrain operators, mechanics, support personnel and management assigned to running the system is underway.
